Statute law, also known as legislation, is law made by Parliament. This module walks through how a Bill becomes an Act, from its introduction and debate in Parliament through to Royal Assent and commencement. Once passed, statute law always prevails over the common law. It is administered by the Executive Government through Ministers and government departments, which may also make delegated legislation in the form of rules and regulations. Because legislation is often drafted in broad terms, courts play a critical role in statutory interpretation, the way to determine how an Act applies to the specific facts of a case.
